Conversation Cafe is a free conversational english as an additional language program (EAL) for the whole family. Offering learning online and in-person.
Our in-person classes take place on Wednesdays at 6:45 PM NST. Our online classes happen on Mondays and Thursdays at 7 PM NST, learn more here.
Conversation Cafe provides an opportunity for people to improve their conversational English Language in an informal setting through intentional, facilitated small group conversation. Some of our students do not know any English at all and some are quite proficient and just want to improve pronunciation.
Our weekly adult program helps individuals improve their English while having conversations with small groups of people. Individuals are paired with trained and certified volunteers and others at their same language level.
We offer an in house children’s program for nursery, preschool, and school aged children. Each week, children will be provided with a snack upon their arrival and then move into classrooms, based on age. Inside these classrooms, their English skills will improve through conversations, teaching activities, and play. *Specifically for Children of Participants in the Adult Program
Conversation Cafe is available through online conversational instruction. Anyone with the desire to improve their English (and with internet access) can join us for these free online classes.
Conversation Cafe also provides an opportunity to participate in a Youth and Young Adult Mentorship program for teenage children of participants in the Adult program. This mentorship program promotes development and growth in their leadership skills.
Conversation Cafe has been operating informal EAL in St. John’s Newfoundland and Labrador for 30+ years. We regularly celebrate the stories of growing in confidence and friendships/community that we hear from our participants (you’ll find some of those stories throughout our site). We know that the impact of our program isn’t easily summed up by a number, but we’re thankful that every number is a new friend we’ve made!
There are over 190 adult participants who are currently registered for classes either online or in person.
There are over 85 child participants who attend our in person program with the participants of our adult program.
There are over 70 volunteers who serve in a multitude of ways in our programs. If you’d like to volunteer, let us know!
